Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Exhibition
Lorem Ipsum conceived, designed, and brought to life a permanent exhibition dedicated to Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi — founder of Sahaja Yoga and a widely revered spiritual leader. Commissioned by members of the Sahaja Yoga community in the United States, the project set out to articulate her legacy in a way that is both faithful to its depth and accessible to audiences encountering her life and teachings for the first time.

The exhibition is housed within Shri Mataji’s former residence in New Jersey — the only home in the United States personally designed by her. The project required working within a space that is both architecturally fixed and symbolically charged. Rather than imposing a new structure, Lorem Ipsum treated the house itself as a narrative framework, allowing its scale, layout, and atmosphere to shape the visitor experience.

The exhibition unfolds across five thematic chapters, structured as a gradual journey through Shri Mataji’s relationship with America. Moving beyond a strictly chronological format, the narrative weaves together personal history, historical context, and reflection — tracing her path from childhood in India during the independence movement to her decades of work in the United States. The experience is conceived as an emotional progression, guiding visitors through moments of transformation, responsibility, and purpose.

A single, continuous design gesture unifies the exhibition: a flowing fabric inspired by a Khadi sari. Suspended throughout the space, it moves from room to room, guiding visitors intuitively through the narrative. The sari operates simultaneously as a spatial connector, a storytelling medium, and a cultural symbol — evoking ideas of freedom, self-reliance, and maternal presence. Within the constraints of the existing architecture, it became both the conceptual anchor and the primary organizational device of the exhibition.

Archival materials and personal artifacts are complemented by a restrained use of light, sound, and media, creating an environment that remains intimate and focused. A key decision was to minimize external interpretation and allow Shri Mataji’s own voice to lead the experience. Through recordings, texts, and portraits, her presence accompanies visitors throughout, establishing a direct and personal connection.
The central media program was developed and produced by Lorem Ipsum, including a dedicated shoot with members of the Sahaja Yoga community. Their testimonies were edited into a unified narrative reflecting the personal impact of Shri Mataji’s work across different lives and generations.

Lorem Ipsum was responsible for the full scope of the project — from concept and narrative development to spatial design, media production, and fabrication. The result is an exhibition that translates a deeply personal and spiritual legacy into a clear, contemporary experience grounded in place, material, and human stories.
